Fentress Co. Commission Appoints New Sheriff Tonight

The Fentress County Commission will appoint a new permanent Sheriff tonight ( Monday, July 17) during their regularly scheduled monthly meeting beginning at 6 p.m. Commissioners will choose from five candidates including Interim Sheriff Gary Wayne Ledbetter, James Allen Conatser, Rodney Benson Insco, Michael Andrew Reagon and Tommy Lee Rosencrats. The appointment comes just days before former Fentress County Sheriff Charles "Chucky" Cravens is scheduled to appear in court on July 20 for sentencing after he pleaded guilty to using his position to have sex with female inmates at the Fentress County Jail. The newly appointed Sheriff will be sworn in by General Sessions Judge Todd Burnett in the Large Courtroom of the Fentress County Justice Center at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 18.


Sparta Woman Dies Following Hit-And-Run Accident

A White County woman died following a hit-and-run accident in Nashville early Saturday morning. Authorities say 29-year-old Kayla D. Anderson, of Sparta, went to a convenience market with a friend when she reportedly walked away. The friend says Anderson was intoxicated. Around 3:30 a.m. a witness heard tires squeal and a woman scream. Based on her injuries, police think Anderson was lying in the road on Charlotte Pike when she was hit. She died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. As of Sunday afternoon, the driver of the vehicle that hit Anderson remained at large.


Hiker dies after cardiac distress near Mt. Le Conte

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Rangers responded to a call about a man in cardiac distress on Alum Cave Trail Saturday morning.

Investigators said Phillip Basset Davenport, 47, was hiking down the trail from Mt. Le Conte with friends after his stay at LeConte Lodge on Friday.

Rangers said Davenport passed out three miles from the trail-head and that bystanders administered CPR.

Park medics responded, but Davenport passed away around 11:14 Saturday morning.


Harwell Will Run for Governor

Republican House Speaker Beth Harwell says she is running for governor. Harwell told The Tennessean that she has "a proven, practical results record" with nearly 30 years of legislative experience including six years in leadership. Harwell cited her work on issues ranging from taxes to education during an interview at her Nashville home.


Operation Southern Shield Starts Monday

Police in five Southeastern states are launching a weeklong program to reduce summertime wrecks and traffic deaths. "Operation Southern Shield" starts Monday in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee. Extra patrols are being funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Statistics from the agency show wrecks killed about 35,000 people in the United States in 2015.
